Medical Massage In Michigan
February 17, 2006
I am a Blue Heron Academy Graduate, with over 600 class room hours and over 90 clinical. The 90 clinical hours was closely over seen by Doctors at a Chiropractors office where I did my internship. There are many Blue Heron Academy campuses in Michigan and Indiana. Their philosophy is medical massage, finding the root of problems and correcting them with a deep understanding of anatomy.

At the Blue Heron, the course work is accelerated. It takes 6 months from start to end. The cost for me because I took a student loan is about $7,000.00. It is the best school in my opinion because they care about rehabilitating clients not just a feel good rub down. The campus I attended is on Big Beaver Rd. in Troy, Michigan. While I was there I learned all of the muscle groups, their actions, insertions and attachments which are so important because they help stabilize and make our bodies move.

The main reason I attended was because I have been doing therapy for the last 25 years and I wanted a deeper understanding of massage as a whole, and not just a feel good response but correct the problems response. I like the different joint physics that the school taught me and I apply them every day. I think that Thai massage should be a part of the curriculum and feel that many people will benefit from it. I came across it from a friend who is from Thailand and mentioned to me one day that while there they had a Thai massage each week of their two month stay. If you can imagine this, Yoga stretching, deep, long stretching but done for you while your muscle are relaxed and flaccid. I have learned that when a client has a muscle spasm and its causing pain that it helps to alternate moist heat for twenty minutes, off for forty five, ice for twenty minutes off for forty five. If that does not work try tapping with your first and second index fingers. When you ice always include zip lock bag and a pillow case to protect the skin from frost bite.

It is very very very difficult to find a full time position as a therapist in Michigan. Basically, it’s word of mouth and one client at a time. In Michigan the legislature wants to adopt licensure for therapist but the AMMA and another large and powerful organization are having problems agreeing on the verbiage. It’s been a heated battle in our State Capitol for some time. There are hundreds of day spas and thousands of chiropractors within the city and for a male therapist it’s even harder. Women therapists have somewhat of an easier time finding part time work at best. My friend’s sister lives in Paris and she simply states that she could not live a healthy normal life with out getting a massage every week. It’s their way of life, and should the U.S. ever get wise, there will be less stress and better health in our country.

All in all whether I'm helping a client reduce pain or just giving a spa, feel good massage, its what I'm all about, making a difference in someone's life.
