Read to the end...its worth it!
My name is Ray and to formally learn massage/bodywork has been a great experience for me as the learning continues every day. From my first try as a young kid trying to ease the pain in my fathers' hard working shoulders, I thought I had something; call it the "knack" or the "magic touch" it seemed to be a instinctive, intuitive sense that led my hands to relieve pain. Later in life, friends and family encouraged me to seek formal training.
I was in the private security business for years; ending up in 1990 as campus police officer. During that time I came to study Chinese martial arts at a school and Asian medicine and philosophy on my own. A true well-adept martial artist must know how to heal as well as hurt and I knew my way was massage therapy for healing.
With my son's birth in 1995, touch be came a whole new thing. I had to learn how to nurture and comfort. When the opportunity arose to attend massage school, I knew I was ready. So my son started kindergarten and I started a 20 month course of study at The Connecticut Centre for Massage Therapy in my hometown of Newington ct. in 2000
I was a little surprised to be only one of four males in a class of twenty four, but it didn't matter much. The school is one of the best in New England with experienced, talented teachers and a fully accredited course of study. WE learned all aspects of anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology and naturally, massage and bodywork. There were studies concerning personal development and potential, Ethics and business practices. The student clinic with practice clients from the community was especially fun as was acupressure and field trips to sporting events to practice sports massage as it happens. The study of energy work fit nicely with my previous Tai Chi training
The hands-on part was the best and the "book learning'" was a bit tough since it had been a long while that I had been in school (back in the 1900s)....I graduated in the spring of 2002, passed my national certification test and had my license by June and set out to find employment
My first job was at one of the Native American Indian casinos in ct. It was a fast paced, high turn over, state of the art spa with fantastic treatment rooms. Some days I was asked to do nine sessions. The money was good but the one hour commute from door to door along with the fast pace started leading to burn-out. So, after over 700 clients and 7 months I had a opportunity to open my own practice just blocks from my home and family. I later added a certification of orthopaedic massage for my required continuing education credits
Now I'm “livin' the dream”; business has been up and down but I'm paying the bills and working for myself. this past January I did 45 sessions and new clients have been referred on a regular basis. The future looks bright! Visit me at newmeadowmassage.com
Funny story…
Working at helping people is very rewarding and sometimes a bit funny.......While working at the casino, one male client fell asleep face up while listening to the background music "songs of the humpback whales" This guy was so relaxed and in a dream state that he began to unconsciously fill his cheeks with air and let out a big " pluusshhhh" every few seconds (like the sound of a whales blowhole). After the session ended, I woke him up and said "Dude! You were like, swimming with the whales!" Astonished he said "how did you know what I was dreaming that’s incredible!" .....Just a guess, I said.
