Allied Health School of Massage, Florida
March 03, 2006
Hello there, my massage therapy enthusiasts!

My name is Michael and I am a Licensed Massage Therapist with over 8 years of massage therapy experience.

My personal quest for a Massage Therapy school included searching for a school that had several criteria. It would be close to my home location
(while I was living in South Tampa, Florida); be reasonably priced; have a long standing tradition in having appropriate credentials and being an effective school with a very high national massage therapy exam pass rate.

The Humanities Center Institute of Allied Health School of Massage in Pinellas Park, Florida was that school which I attended from May to November 1998.

It was a school dedicated to entry level career training that encompassed relaxation and therapeutic massage techniques that prepared me for my careers in teaching at a professional Massage Therapy School in Stamford, CT and working for numerous spas in South Florida and in Fairfield County, Connecticut. I studied in a 672 hour program including Swedish Massage, Anatomy & Physiology, Neuromuscular or
Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Postural Muscle Techniques and Positional Release.

I remember taking six months and spending roughly $6,000 (1998 rates) for the complete full-time course.

Class was from 8:30 to 2:30 Monday through Friday which was 24 hours a week. There were two groups of 16 in our class group and sometimes we would learn together as in lectures or split up to exchange within
groups A or B. You could only miss up to 10% of the total time of the program (around 67 hours or almost 3 weeks of class) but if you missed more, then you have a month to make it up or would have to start over in the next program that started every two months. Since there was a new class every two months, we would see the senior group graduating and have the benefit of their knowledge, then we would practice on each other and the junior group and then we would move up the ranks every two months until graduation.

We were all trained using Oakworks Tables and BodyCushions and our draping included towels and some sheet draping. The Humanities Center was unique in that BodyCushions were not taught anywhere else and towel draping was easier to use than sheet draping. Most schools taught only on the tables which is flat and places much pressure on your internal organs and your back. The BodyCushions would support your chest, hips and ankles and the face cradle together provided a method of relaxation that a massage table alone could not duplicate.

I can honestly say I used all of my training from the Humanities Center and actually was better prepared than many other massage therapists I’ve met over the past 8 years of practicing massage therapy in Tampa,
Ft. Lauderdale, Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Connecticut, and North California including Sausalito, Berkeley and San Francisco. When I taught at a Massage Therapy School in Stamford, CT a few years ago, I was able to use my lectures from the Humanities Center to demonstrate their level of excellence and how to be an effective massage therapist.

Overall, I would say I was very lucky to have encountered the Humanities Center Institute of Allied Health School of Massage and if you’re lucky enough to be able to stay in Pinellas County or Hillsborough County, you should definitely look into attending the
Humanities Center.
